In addition to the benefits of using CBD products, there are things you can do to stay healthy and boost your immune system this frigid winter…

Watch what you eat

Beware of highly concentrated calories in “healthy” snacks like dried fruit, granolas, smoothies and juices. Although they are good for you, they should be eaten in moderation because they can affect your blood glucose levels and increase weight gain quickly.

Try to eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables – getting all the colors of the rainbow in your body is a great way to guarantee you are getting all the micronutrients you need.

The fact that obesity is a national epidemic may not be entirely dependent on diet and exercise. Our daily exposure to chemicals in our world is contributing to our body’s fat storage. So eating clean when you can matters.

Buying and eating organic produce and meats whenever possible, and watching what ingredients are in your prepared foods, are wonderful ways to maintain a holistic diet.

Cooking as many meals and snacks as you can from scratch is an easy path to eat healthier.

Eating whole, unrefined and unprocessed foods offers the soundest nutrients – not only nourishing your cells with goodness but adding fewer toxins to your body, which is always beneficial.

Consume Probiotics

Eat fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut, and cultured milk products like kefir (available dairy-free) to maintain stable gut flora. The benefit of these foods is balancing out your gut flora – our intestines contain an average of 100 trillion bacteria of multiple strains.

Many of these play an important role in protecting our health. Creating a balance between helpful and harmful bacteria in the gut can restore any damages done by antibiotics, poor nutrition, stress, and other factors that can compromise your immune system.

A majority of our immunity comes from our digestive system; consuming probiotics, which you get from fermented foods or a broad-spectrum probiotic supplement, helps you to maintain a healthy balance of these organisms. This alone provides a variety of health benefits, from promoting a healthier digestive tract to boosting immunity.

Drink plenty of liquids

We have been told over the years to drink so many glasses of water a day to stay healthy… well the current recommendation in the functional medicine world suggests having ½ an ounce of water per pound of body weight daily.

This equates to a balance of water to plasma in your cells and creates an equilibrium shift across the membrane. This osmotic effect naturally allows the toxins to exude from your cells and be carried away through your waste products and eliminated.

Keep in mind we don’t hydrate while we sleep, so having a glass of water first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day off.

Try to add liquids to your day in all forms – tea, sparkling water, fruited water, herbed water – whatever it takes to get it in you!

Lifestyle habits

Try not to do anything in excess while you are focused on boosting your immune system. Staying strong on a cellular level is key to maintaining balance.

Watch what you do and how you do it. Adding extra stress to your body does not help move forward with healing and can work against you maintaining your current state of health. If you are exposed to a virus or nasty bacteria – prevention is the best method to fight off whatever comes your way.

Quit smoking if you do, or at least cut down on how much you smoke. The toxin load on your system seriously compromises your immunity.

Don’t drink in excess. If you are a daily drinker, try cutting down on how much you have; less is best. If you are a social drinker, try not to overdo it when you are out, getting “drunk” taxes your liver, dehydrates you, and weighs down your immune system. Plus afterward, your body needs to expend a lot of energy to detox from your night of fun, making you susceptible to pick up any illness you may be exposed to.

Make sure you get enough sleep regularly, our body needs this time to reset and repair from our daily habits. Also, mentally this is the best way to reduce stress, which always works against us.

Proper hygiene is important to stave off infections – wash your hands every time you touch something outside of your home like door handles or ATM buttons. The exposure to diseases we experience daily, especially now that we are dealing with a pandemic, can greatly be reduced with simple soap and water.

Exercise regularly, even if you don’t do a full workout every day; walk the dog, do jumping jacks, ride a bike – just get your blood flowing and your heart rate up.

The action of movement works our muscles which in turn moves our lymphatic fluids throughout the body, eliminating our toxins and parasites through sweat, urine, and feces. Exercise also releases endorphins that excite the brain releasing stress and brings calm to your day.

Lastly, try to find peace in your daily grind. Create a routine of self-care and relaxation. There are many different relaxation techniques – breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, tai chi, qi gong, prayer, guided imagery…find what fits you.

May your winter be filled with peace, joy, and good health!
