Sri Lanka Navy seizes over 164 kg of Kerala cannabis in northern sea

July 18, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy seized over 164 kg stock of Kerala cannabis, during a special operation conducted in the sea area south of Mandaitivu, Jaffna on Thursday, the Navy Media Unit said.
Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting regular operations to prevent illegal drugs being smuggled to the island via sea routes.
During a special operation conducted by a group of naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command in the sea area south of Mandaitivu, a suspicious dinghy was spotted.
Upon search of the dinghy, the naval personnel found over 164kg of Kerala cannabis in small packages concealed in the dinghy.
Accordingly, the stock of Kerala cannabis, the dinghy and two suspects aboard were taken into naval custody.
The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Jaffna. The stock of cannabis along with the suspects and the dinghy was handed over to the Police Special Task Force, Jaffna for further investigation.
The Navy has been able to seize over 3,376 kg of Kerala cannabis during its operations conducted in the past months this year.
